Up until then, most of Lisa’s stories for Giggles hadn’t been exposed much further than her filing cabinets, even though her Puppet Show had been performing with the character during school holidays. It was a challenging experience. But since the first live appearance as “Giggles the Activity Clown” her character has developed and established a very distinct identity.

Now known as “Giggles the Safety Clown”, she is Lisa’s vehicle to explore the dimensions of a child’s personality:

"What makes Giggles sad? What makes Giggles happy? What makes it hard to look after myself? What makes Giggles frightened? How does Giggles feel when faced with bullies, and aggressive and abusive big people?"

All of these issues are not addressed at once, or exposed at once. But the different aspects to Giggles offer a better reflection of a child’s world, by allowing pain and sadness, and fear as a part of our real world. Children, like Giggles, can develop ways to respond to situations which are creating these feelings.

Giggles is a very special character and a very ‘clever’ clown. She could just as accurately be described as a little girl who is growing up and learning new things. Perhaps this is why, together with her vibrant comedy, she is always so endearing to children. The ever changing floor show for “Giggles the Safety Clown” involves lots of audience participation, clowning, and singing. The new puppet show, in which Giggles narrates a unique version of “Goldilocks & the Three Bears” explores safety boundaries for children. New songs include “I can eat my vegetables”, “Taking Care of Me!” as well as “I can look after myself”.

"Four Simple Safety Principles."

"Four Simple Safety Principles" is a clown/theatre production that seeks to convey principles of personal safety. In the light hearted first half of the show, Giggles explores how I CAN LOOK AFTER MYSELF (ICLAM) by taking a confident, friendly approach , by breathing fresh air, by running around for exercise, by eating my vegetables, by going to bed before I get tired, and by enjoying myself and being happy. Giggles discovers that I CAN look after myself when I dress myself, when I make my own lunch, when I get out of my bed in the morning on time, when I’m in the bath and when I’m any place, doing anything! This is ICLAM in non-threatening and safe situations.

In the second half of the show, Giggles discovers that it is harder to look after herself in unsafe situations, and that there are many situations that can occur which are not safe. Since she cannot explore every unsafe situation on the show, Giggles discovers four principles that can be applied to any situation:

1. I have a right to feel safe and be safe all of the time.

2. I can take action on every problem.

3. We can talk about anything with people we trust.

4. We can persist in taking action to improve our safety.

Other shows include: “BOO the bully!” and “STOP! I don’t like it!” (Campaign against sexual assault). These shows are ideal for an educational environment.
